Best Coast Sailing (BCS) is a California high-performance Optimist racing team led by program director and head coach Jack Barton. The program provides personalized coaching for committed youth sailors, with an emphasis on racing fundamentals, deliberate skill development and a healthy competitive mindset. BCS trains out of Marina Bay in Richmond and sails on the Berkeley Circle, one of San Francisco Bay’s major racing venues. Local practices use focused drills and seasonal evaluation to build boat speed, boat handling, tactics and race-course decision-making. The program also welcomes guest sailors when space is available. Competition and travel are a central part of the program. BCS supports both the Northern and Southern California Optimist circuits and travels to larger USODA events, giving its sailors experience across different venues and conditions. Best Coast sailors are visible in major Optimist competition; the program has fielded sailors at events including Optimist Team Trials and California championship regattas. Jack Barton grew up sailing at San Francisco Yacht Club, raced Optimists for eight years, spent three years on the national team and represented the United States internationally. His later sailing included the Laser and J/22, and he twice won the U.S. Triplehanded Championship as skipper before establishing Best Coast Sailing in the Bay Area. The Skiff Sailing Foundation supports Best Coast Sailing with facilities and equipment, helping the team maintain a strong Richmond training base while giving young sailors access to high-quality coaching, regular racing and travel opportunities.
