USA 50 Racing—Olympic Experience Meets a New Partnership
USA 50 Racing enters the LA28 cycle with something few new partnerships possess: direct Olympic experience and a program identity designed to endure.
Skipper Sarah Newberry Moore represented the United States in the Nacra 17 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with David Liebenberg. Their earlier campaign also earned silver at the 2023 Pan American Games and secured the United States’ Nacra 17 berth for Paris. After the Games, Sarah committed to another Olympic cycle and began the process of finding the right partner for 2028.
That new partnership is with Hoel Menard, a San Francisco Bay Area sailor with experience in high-performance foiling classes including the WASZP and Nacra 15. Hoel joined Sarah while finishing his studies at UCLA, and the two became a full-time team in June 2026.
Their early results provide a useful picture of how an Olympic partnership develops. With fewer than 30 days together in the boat, USA 50 finished 25th at the 2026 Nacra 17 World Championship in Quiberon, France. The team followed that benchmark with 13th at Kiel Week and 29th at the European Championship. In August 2026, Sarah and Hoel completed their first concentrated full-time training camp in San Pedro, the LA28 venue for boat events.
The Nacra 17 demands more than two talented sailors. It requires precise coordination between helm and crew as the boat foils at high speed. Maneuvers, sail trim, foil control, tactical decisions, and communication must happen together. A new team therefore has to build shared instincts while simultaneously racing against established international partnerships.
The name USA 50 comes from the boat’s sail number and was chosen to represent the team, collaboration, and all 50 states—not only one pairing. That identity carries the experience of the prior campaign into the next chapter while leaving room for a new partnership to grow.
Sarah and Hoel are now working toward a rare opportunity: competing in a home Olympic Games on waters where they can train throughout the cycle. The objective is LA28, but the immediate work is measured in training days, international starts, technical development, and steady gains against the world’s best.
