Los Angeles will welcome the world’s best sailors in 2028. The work of helping athletes reach that level is happening now. The Skiff Sailing Foundation is a publicly supported 501(c)(3) qualified amateur sports organization dedicated to promoting and supporting high-performance sailing. Its mission is to increase the sport’s popularity and accessibility by providing equipment and approved funding to qualified athletes and programs with national and international goals. That mission matters because talent alone does not create access. Moving into a faster or more technical class can require equipment that is difficult for an emerging athlete to obtain. International progress may depend on coaching, training partners, transportation, race entry, and reliable time on the water. Even experienced athletes can lose momentum when a campaign lacks the infrastructure to convert effort into competition. The Foundation specializes in helping sailors transition into fast boats and giving them a stronger chance to succeed. Its website also gives athletes and teams a place to explain who they are, what they are pursuing, and how supporters can learn more. Current profiles include Nacra 17 and ILCA 7 campaigns working toward LA28, as well as other high-performance sailors and teams developing toward national and international goals. Support is governed carefully. Contributions belong to the Foundation, and its directors retain discretion over their use. Donors may state a preference for a particular campaign, but the Foundation does not create athlete-owned balances or accept donor-directed contributions. Grants and equipment are awarded through an application and approval process consistent with the Foundation’s charitable purpose. That distinction lets the organization support athlete development while preserving independent oversight. It also gives donors several ways to engage. A supporter may contribute to the Foundation, learn about a featured campaign, offer equipment, inquire about a boat donation, volunteer expertise, or introduce the organization to people who care about Olympic and high-performance sailing. LA28 is a powerful deadline, but the Foundation’s purpose extends beyond one Games. Equipment placed in service can develop more than one sailor. Coaching and training opportunities can strengthen a whole fleet. Athletes who receive help can return knowledge to younger sailors and widen the pathway into advanced classes. The Olympic starting line is exceptionally narrow. The pathway into high-performance sailing should not be.
