Hoel Menard is a San Francisco Bay Area sailor with roots at Richmond Yacht Club and St. Francis Yacht Club. He developed through high-performance youth and foiling classes, including the Nacra 15 and WASZP, before moving into the Nacra 17 for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle. His WASZP racing established him on the international foiling circuit. In 2024 he finished fifth at the UK National Championships and EuroCup event and second at the Atlantic Coast Championship. His 2025 season included third at the French WASZP Championship, eighth at Foiling Week, eighth at the North American Championship and 12th at the WASZP Games in the United Kingdom. The class rewards the same combination of boat handling, balance, speed and technical learning that carries directly into Olympic foiling catamarans. Sarah Newberry Moore selected Hoel as her new USA 50 Racing crew after her Paris 2024 Olympic campaign and a yearlong search for a partner for the next cycle. Sarah described his high-performance background, athleticism, calm decision-making and learning-driven approach as central reasons for forming the partnership. Hoel entered the campaign with Nacra 15 and WASZP experience and began the process of translating those skills into the more physical and technically demanding Nacra 17. The new team began international competition in 2026. With fewer than 30 days together in the boat before the World Championship in Quiberon, Sarah and Hoel finished 25th. They followed that result with 13th at Kiel Week and continued with European training blocks and racing in San Pedro, the future Olympic sailing venue. His current work with USA 50 combines international racing, Nacra 17 technical development and training alongside an experienced Olympian, with the shared objective of representing the United States at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
