Carson Crain grew up sailing in Northeast Harbor, Maine and built his early high-performance career in Olympic windsurfing. He competed for Team USA in the men’s RS:X class at World Championships, Olympic test events and the 2015 Pan American Games, developing the combination of physical preparation, speed work and technical analysis that has continued through his later campaigns. In 2016 Carson founded Next Generation USA, the American team selected for the 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in Bermuda. He served as helmsman of the foiling 45-foot catamaran and also managed the day-to-day work of running the team. The project moved him from board sailing into professional foiling and large multihull competition and became an important step toward his later Nacra 17 campaign. Carson returned briefly to Olympic windsurfing in 2018 and then pursued professional sailing opportunities, including training with Stars+Stripes USA. In 2020 he shifted his Olympic focus to the Nacra 17, the foiling mixed multihull used in the Games. He has since competed through multiple Nacra 17 World Championship seasons, with a best World Championship finish of 14th in 2021. During the Paris 2024 cycle Carson raced USA 34 with Lindsay Gimple. The team finished second in the U.S. Olympic selection process, narrowly missing the Paris Games. Carson continued into the Los Angeles cycle and now races with Catherine “B” Lindsay. Their 2026 season has included the international Nacra 17 circuit, with 21st at the European Championship and 32nd at the World Championship. USA 34 is now focused on the Los Angeles 2028 cycle, including international racing and training on the future Olympic waters of San Pedro and Long Beach. Carson’s campaign combines more than a decade of Olympic-class competition with experience in windsurfing, foiling catamarans, professional sailing and the Youth America’s Cup, all directed toward representing the United States in the Nacra 17 at a home Olympic Games.
