How Support from The Skiff Sailing Foundation Works for Athletes

The Skiff Sailing Foundation supports amateur athletes and teams through an application-based process. You may apply at any time for a specific need, part of your current campaign, or a separate project.

1. Apply for what you need

Your application can request cash support; Foundation-owned equipment; or both. Please explain your goal, expected costs, timing, other available support, and what you are asking The Skiff Sailing Foundation to provide. The maximum amount the Foundation can approve for an application is the amount you requested.

2. Expect some back-and-forth

The Skiff Sailing Foundation may ask questions, request more detail, or suggest changes before making a decision. You may be asked to clarify costs, schedule, equipment needs, other funding, campaign plans, or other details relevant to the request. This is a normal part of the application process.

3. The Skiff Sailing Foundation makes a decision on each application

The Skiff Sailing Foundation may approve the request, approve a modified amount or structure, or decline it. Support may include cash, use of Foundation equipment, or both. Each application receives its own decision, although the Foundation may consider your overall campaign and other Foundation support. Fundraising is encouraged, but it is not a condition of receiving support.

4. Use support for the approved purpose

Foundation support must be used for the purpose approved in your application. Please let us know if there is a significant change in campaign scope, class or discipline, team composition, budget, major outside funding, or use of Foundation equipment. Minor day-to-day changes usually do not require a new application.

5. Help us tell your story and fundraise

All supported athletes are encouraged to help build support for the Foundation. This includes athletes receiving equipment-only support. Please keep The Skiff Sailing Foundation supplied with current bio information, photos and video, results, schedules, campaign goals, budget information, and meaningful updates. This helps us present your campaign accurately and fundraise effectively around the athletes and programs we support. We also encourage athletes to build a small group of supporters who can help with introductions, outreach, events, and fundraising. Fundraising associated with your campaign does not create a personal account or balance and does not automatically determine future support.

6. Report on how support was used

Receipts and appropriate documentation are required for Foundation-funded expenses. Please keep us updated on campaign progress and results. New applications may be held or rejected if required reports or receipts from prior support are still outstanding.

7. Apply again whenever another need arises

You do not need to wait for a formal grant cycle. You may submit another application for another phase of the same campaign, a different expense, additional equipment, or a separate project. The Skiff Sailing Foundation will look at the full picture, including prior support, current needs, other available resources, reporting status, and Foundation capacity. Each new application is a new decision.

Apply for a specific need. Work with us to refine the request. Use approved support for its intended purpose. Keep us informed and provide receipts. Help us tell and fundraise the story. Apply again whenever another need arises.
